I really hate how lower class jobs such as working at retail, fast foods like Mcdonald’s, Tim Hortons and Grocery stores get you to work on statutory holidays like Canada day, Victoria day, Easter or Thanksgiving. At the very least though, they close on Christmas day. But there is one kind of business that is wide open on Christmas day, and thats the movie cinemas. A lot of movies get released on Christmas and I find that Shameful!
These businesses that are open on Christmas, How much would it kill them to be closed and let there employees enjoy the day with there families? Sure they may earn double wages on holidays. But i’m sure some would rather have the day to be with family. It is not like one day of not being open will get the business to go bankrupt.
The law says that an employee who works in a designated tourist area where business can be allowed to be open on holidays can choose to have a day off or work and receive double wages. But I am sure that you will have some employer out there who’s an asshole and notifies that all employees must come to work on a day like Christmas for example. Even for businesses that are not in any tourist designated area, they would rather pay the fine issued by the city to be opened on a holiday. That’s why movie cinemas will be open on Christmas.
